Did you know that many common birth control methods are actually abortive?  Here's a summary of various birth control methods.  For each option, we summarize the relative effectiveness, benefits and disadvantages -- and whether or not it is abortive.

Please note that this is a general summary of the most common birth control methods and is only intended to be an overview. You should always consult your doctor or health care professional before using birth control.

Abstain

Let’s face it, you can’t get pregnant if you aren’t having sex. Enough said.  All other birth control methods are less than 100% effective.  In addition, sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) now effect more than 50 million people in the U.S.  They include herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV), HIV, and AID's -related diseases.  Condoms do not protect against the HPV virus (transmitted in genital area).  A year-long study of female students visiting the University of California/Berkeley showed that 47% of them were infected.  Read more about HPV.
